How To Keep Your Dog Cool In Summer

Updated: May 29, 2020

Summer is finally here and we've already seen some lovely warm days, welcomed by us humans but our dogs may not be as happy about it. On hot days we can find shade, help ourselves to a cold drink, take off some layers but our dogs are stuck in their fur coat, they are left in one particular place when home alone and perhaps unable to seek a cooler part of the house. Dogs can't tell us when they are too hot, so it's important that we can spot the signs and know what to do to help them stay comfortable.

What should you look for? Excessive panting Blood shot eyes Increased drooling Pale and dry gums

Unable to focus and less responsive to commands Rapid heart rate

Tips to keep your dog cool

  • Avoid walking and exercising your dog during the hottest part of the day. It's best to walk your dog in the early morning and in the evening when the temperature is cooler.

  • Provide plenty of fresh cold water. Make sure to wash their food and water bowls after every use.

  • Do the pavement test- if the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand then its too hot for your dogs paws.

  • Never leave your dog in the car, hot cars can be a very dangerous place.

  • Freeze a stuffed kong with something delicious such as mashed banana, natural yoghurt and peanut butter.

  • Make pupsicles-there are lots of different foods that you can pop in an ice cube tray and cover with stock or water. They make a perfect refreshing snack during the hot summer days.

  • Get your dog summer ready by taking a trip to the groomers and give them a summer hair cut.

  • Give your dog access to a fan

  • Shallow fill a paddling pool to allow your dog to take a dip.

  • Place a wet towel on the ground for your dog to lay on.

  • Always carry water for your dog to drink during walks.

  • Cool them down by misting them with water.

  • If you're having a BBQ remember that food and drinks offered to guests may be dangerous to your dog.

If you suspect your dog may be suffering from heat stroke then act fast, get your dog to a cool shaded area and cool them down with cool to room temperature water. Avoid using very cold water as this is counterproductive as cooling to quickly can trigger other life threatening conditions. Offer your dog fresh water to drink but never force them to drink.

Most importantly enjoy the summer but remember to keep your dog safe from the hot weather.
